San Marzano DOP Tomatoes: About the Nolano Tomatoes in Our Sauce

Tomato sauce being spread on pizza dough with a ladle

The tomato is the base of every red pizza on our menus. On the Marinara at Vijzelgracht 33 and Amstelveenseweg 63 and 65, it is the only topping besides oregano and garlic oil. Our sauce starts with San Marzano DOP tomatoes from Nolano. Here is what San Marzano DOP means, and what we know about our tomatoes.

What are San Marzano tomatoes?

San Marzano is an elongated Italian plum tomato from Campania, the region around Naples, with firm flesh and fewer seeds.

What does DOP mean?

DOP stands for Denominazione di Origine Protetta: in English, Protected Designation of Origin, a European Union protection.

The protected name is Pomodoro San Marzano dell'Agro Sarnese-Nocerino DOP. These tomatoes are grown in a defined area of Campania between Naples and Salerno, on volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius.

About our Nolano tomatoes

Our San Marzano DOP tomatoes come from Nolano. As our ingredients page puts it: grown in Campania, picked by hand and processed within hours. Rich, naturally sweet and balanced by a gentle acidity. The tomato behind our sauce.
